Commemorative bricks offer tangible display of CSU support
Columbus State University alumni and friends can now purchase commemorative bricks that will be part of a high-profile Founders Plaza in front of the new Schuster Center for Student Success, which will open in in late 2009 at the University Avenue entrance to main campus.
The Alumni Association project features bricks etched with the names of purchasers or the names of those they wish to honor or memorialize. The Alumni Association initially conceived establishing Founders Plaza as part of the school’s 40th anniversary celebration in 1998 and sold a limited number of bricks. But the project got sidelined, partly because the plaza needed to be part of a long-range campus landscape plan.

“The commitment to create the plaza and to honor the investment of those who bought bricks earlier was strong,” said Ray Lakes, executive director of the association. June 30, 2010 is the deadline to buy bricks for installation in fall 2010. Bricks purchased earlier will be part of the plaza by January 2010 as part of initial Schuster Center landscaping. All proceeds beyond brick costs will fund CSU student scholarships. |
A regular size brick (paver) holds up to three lines of lettering, with 14 spaces per line. Double-size bricks, appropriate for memorials or company advertising, may have up to five lines. Regular bricks cost $50 each, and a double brick is $80.
The Alumni Association has established a secure Web site for purchasing bricks online with a credit card. As an alternative, checks made out to the CSU Foundation for brick purchases, plus printed information on the words to be etched, may be mailed to: Alumni Affairs, 4225 University Ave., Columbus, Ga., 31907. “This is an excellent way to commemorate graduation from CSU and honor family, friends and dedicated professors,” Lakes said.
